NEARLY 17 s A CALF

NETHERTON POOL PRICES ANNUAL MEETING HELD ELECTION OF YEAR’S OFFICERS The annual meeting of the Netherton Bobby Calf Pool was held in the Netherton Hall recently. The chairman was Mr W. H. Cheale. There were 17 members of the pool present at the meeting.

The average price paid to the Neth-

erton Bobby Calf Pool during the

past year from one Auckland company was 16s 10.94 d. There were 3,245 calves passed and the total live-weight of the calves passed was 204,235 lbs., and the 332 underweight calves weighed 4,211 lbs. The total nett payments to the pool for calves supplied was £3024 16s. The average weights given in the statistics were: Overall, live 61.07 lbs., dressed 30.84 lbs.;- passed, 62.94 lbs.,- dressed 31.61 lbs.; underweights, 42.81 lbs.; dressed, 20.82 lbs. Gate returns were: Overall, 16s 10.94 d; passed, 17s 9.68 d; underweights, 8s 1.92 d. The average price paid from a second firm was 16s 9.88 d at gate. There were 1269 calves bought by the company for which the nett amount paid was £1062 3s lOd. The average live weight was 66.06 lbs. and dressed 31.82 lbs. In the discussion on the method of disposal of calves Mr C. Townshend suggested that the pool should support the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company and supply that company with a percentage of the calves.

Mr F. Bennett asked whether that scheme would prejudice the pool. in getting tenders. The pool, he said, was getting a good payout, and he did not think that it would be of advantage to the pool to comply with Mr Townshend’s suggestion. Mr Townshend stated that the pool would not be dealing directly with the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company and therefore it would not affect the pool. The tenderers, he said, would be obliged to have the percentage killed at the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company’s works. The secretary, Mr T. Considine, said that the method suggested by Mr Townshend would require a lot of clerical work and that would mean added expense. Mr Townshend said that he could not agree with the secretary. The pool sold the calves at a price per lb and therefore the pool did not come into the picture at all as far as kill-

ing was concerned. The chairman said that the number of calves forwarded was too small to make the scheme worth while. The meeting decided to adopt the same system of disposal as has been practiced in past years. The feeling of the meeting when asked by the chairman regarding the method of payment for calves was that it should be at the gate. The secretary pointed out that the buyers preferred the payment for calves by cheque. After some discussion and, an explanation by the carrier of the difficulties in the making of payment on a motion of Mr Townshend the meeting decided to try out the monthly payment by cheque. A matter that was brought up by the carrier was that proper calf pens were needed.

The meeting decided that the pens should be erected. The carrier stated that he would be prepared to give a number to each farm on the route and he would expect the farmers to paint the numbers on the pens. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr W. H. Cheale; secretary, Mr T. Considine; committee, Messrs H. Heappey, N. Hill, H. F. Louch, R. Morrison, W. Hayes, R. Locke.
