PAEROA CRICKET
By

The fielding* of the Waihi team at the week-end, was the smartest yet seen in Paeroa this season, although some good individual performances were put up in the Watersiders v. Paeroa game. The i Umpires’ Association is functioning well in Paeroa and its members are going great work. One or two are not signalling as well as the others and more attention should be given to this part of the job. Carmichael and Shears each brought off two Very fine catches against Watersiders. Faber and Howard added 99 runs for their partnership. Two very sound innings by two very fine cricketers. ''Brock, Roberts and W.. Williams were the most successful bowlers against Waihi, the last-named bowling exceptionally well. Wicketkeeper Jenkins’ performances over the last two weeks have been excellent. A great improvement is* noticeable in the way he takes the ball on the leg side. Verran scored a quick 20 against Waihi. Jimmy is right on form again and should do well for the remainder of the season. Some of the younger players must realise that runs can be scored from a straight ball. A badly-pitched straight ball is just as easy to play as one pitched off .the wicket. Paeroa bowlers Goldsworthy, Shears and Whisker, did most of the damage against Watersiders, keeping the runs down very well indeed. Tom Smith’s bowling and fielding are due for some very strong criticism. A cricketer who does not use his head is a liability to a team, not an asset.
