STANDARD CHEESE
MORE BUTTER FOR SHIPMENT
FARMERS’ UNION PROPOSAL
That this meeting recommends the manufacture of standard cheese, giving a greater output of butter to the United Kingdom and a greater return to the farmer as well as producing a better quality cheese,” was a remit from Netherton discussed at Tuesday’s meeting in Paeroa of the Northern Thames Sub-Provincial Executive •of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mr W. H. Cheale (Netherton), said members of his branch thought standardisation of cheese would result in more butter being produced for England.
Mr W. Hayes (Netherton) said that the standard of the cheese sent from Canada and Australia was definitely lower than that sent from New Zealand. A lower standard would result in more butter for the Old Country. Other members spoke in support of the proposal. Mr H. H. Hicks of Turua urged the meeting’ to go fully into the matter. He had had experience in the matterand conld assure the meeting there were many disadvantages. Mr C. W. Schultz of Ngatea pointed out that competition would be keen after the war and New Zealand should be careful pot to interfere with the quality of the cheese, produced.
Mr Cheale said the proposal was merely a war measure to give Britain more butter at a critical* time.
It was decided to support the motion, some members voting against it.
