BOWLING IN COROMANDEL
(To the Editor.) Sir, —It must have thrilled the Coromandel Bowling Club to see so many visiting bowlers playing on its green on Saturday last, on the occasion of the official opening. There is much food for thought in the fact that the club’s membership is so low. Is the club exclusive? Are the public apa'thetic ? Is there a lack of that splendid sporting spirit which seems to be part of each New Zealander’s fibre? Practically every man has played some game or othei’ in his ybunger days, so that graduation and gravitation should be towards bowls, as the years increase. Leisure should be profitably used, and what better mental relaxation is there than meeting your fellows on the green on equal terms, in a pleasurable form, and where worries are completely shut out. The population of the township is sufficient for several energetic sports bodies, yet apathy and lethargy are abundantly apparent. This last thought prompts the question: Cannot the dormant croquet club be revived? Coromandel, our honour in these directions is at stake. Let us not live on the past; let us create a healthy present by being forceful, practical, harmonious and confident.—l am, etc., PROGRESS.
