NGATEA SCHOOL

ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM TENDERS TO BE CALLED LABORATORY AND SPORTS ROOM That permission had been granted for the calling of tenders for the erection of an additional classroom, a laboratory and a sports changing room at the Ngatea District High School was announced by Mr J. W. Neate of Ngatea at Wednesday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. Mr Neate in advising the council of the above stated that he had received the following letter from the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, on the matter. The Minister’s' letter reads as under:— “Your letter on September 29 raised the question of the building permit being usdd for the construction of certain extensions to the High School at Ngatea. On my return from your district I had arranged for enquiries to be made into this matter and I have now received a report from the Building Controller. “The question of the proposed additions to the Ngatea District High School was apparently placed before the Building Controller at the end of June, ,but while the job was classed as urgent, there were other outsandingi educational works of higher priority’ and accordingly no action could then be taken to grant the building permit. ’ ’ Builders Available “I had advised. the Building Controller of your suggestion that there were in the district several building contractors fully equipped to tackle work of this nature and the Building Controller advises me that he has again discussed the proposal with the architect of the Education Department who now states that he regards this work as particularly urgent and he considers that labour is available in the locality for its prosecution. “Accordingly, permission has been given for the calling of tenders and when these are received, further consideration will be given to the issue of a building permit at the earliest possible moment. Resurfacing Playing Area (k One other matter which you raised with me at Ngatea has been under consideration, namely, the resurfacing of the bitumen playing area. Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to get any definite information on this matter but I am now informed that it is the responsibility of the Main Highways Board of the Public Works Department and I am, there--fore, taking the. matter up with my colleague, the Minister of Works. “I will forward a copy of this letter to my colleague, the Minister of Education so that he may know of the steps which are being taken to expedite the instructions for the extensions to the High School.”
