XMAS CARDS

BEING MADE IN ENGLAND WORK FOR DESIGNERS FIRST ORDER FROM AUSTRALIA The Christmas cards which the peoples of the British Commonwealth will send to one another next December are already keeping hundreds of artists and designers busy in Britain amidst the bombs.

The first order for them arrived in England on December 29. It was from Australia. Traditionally, Australia orders first. New Zealand is nevt. Then in February, come Canada and the United States. In March South Africa, India, South America and the West Indies follow on.

Tastes, naturally, vary with climates and customers. South America’s cards are warm and vivid in colouring, and done, of course, in Spanish or Portuguese as "well as English. There are no snow scenes.

For India there is a special range appealing to each of many classes, with snow for the hill stations. In the Dominions and Colonies there is a definite preference for sketches or photographs of old corners of London, glimpses at Cathedral cities and pictures of English villages. The Empire demand for Christmas cards from England was better for the second Christmas of the war than for the first when it was remarkably good. The help of the Paper Controller in releasing raw materials will make the present year even better, in the opinion of one of the leading producers.
