NAVAL BALL.

GAY FUNCTION, AT NETHERTON The very successful and ' enjoyable Naval Ball, held in . the Netherton Hall last evening, was p, fitting crown to the untiring efforts of a very active dance committee. There were many dancers arrayed in fancy dresses, which were for the most part sailors’ uniforms. The stage, from which the-Arcadi-ans rendered delightful music, was cleverly decorated to give the appearance of a battleship, and myriads of flags hung round the walls and across the hall, adding to the general effect. The ringing of the eight bells was the order for proceedings to commence, and Mr L. 0. East, in admiral’s uniform, made a short speech, thanking all present for the wonderful way in which they had rolled up for the ball. Mr AV. Morrison, M.C., in bosun’s uniform, then announced the first dance, after which the grand march for those in fancy dress was. held. Mrs G. Lamb and Mrs P. Williams, of Paeroa, acted as judges. The prize for sailor girl’s costume was awarded to Miss Mavis Harold and 1 sailor boy costume to Miss Jean Harold. The prizes for the most original costumes were awarded to Miss Grace Surrey as a Hawaiian i.ady, and Mr Cooper as “Poor Old Cocky.” Prizes for the euchre were awarded io Mrs AV. Richmond and Mrs Tressiducr in the ladies’ section, and Mr J. Vereoe and Mr Pentelow in the gentlemen’s section The Monte Carlo was a great novelty. Coloured discs worked from the roof, from which flags were suspended, being very effective. The successful couple were Miss G. Surrey and Mr C. Hayward. An extra was played by Mr Haydon, and dancing was continued until an early hour. Among those present in fancy dress were Miss M. Pentelow, Sailor Lass; Miss H. Pentelow, Queen of Hearts; Mrs A. Yorke, Pierette; Miss. E. Cooper, Sailor Lass; Miss G. Tresidder, Middy; Miss E. Goodfellow, Glad Eye.
