UNEMPLOYED
MR ARMSTRONG’S FIGURES
(Per Press Association—Copyright),
• FEJLDING. June 17
Speaking at Feilding last evening, Hon. Armstrong criticised the statements of Hon. A. Hamilton, regarding unemployment figures, when Labour took office. He also alleged that the newspapers did not publish tho true figures given by him. “There are 41,000 more employed in shops and factories alone,” said Mr Armstrong. “Does not that knock Mr Hamilton’s statement sk.v high, and that only 35.000 were unemployed in November, 1935. “\Yint about farms also. Are they not employing more labour than when we took office to say nothing of hotels and restaurants? 1 put the employed in shops, factories, and private enterprise', at least another 20,000. making 01.000, The State employed 18.000 more since Laliour came into office, including, public works.
“Therefore, my official returns show employment was found for 79.000 that were unemployed when Labour took office. It we still have unemployed, I am not exaggerating when I say there wore 100 090 unemployed, not 35,000, as Mr Hamilton said, when, we took office.”
