BERLIN’S VIEW

ITALY’S SHARE NOT RECOCNISED AT NYON. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright;. September 15. The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” says: German official circles admit that, from the German and Italian standpoint, something lias been gained at the Nyon Conference by the exclusion of Russia from the Mediterranean- patrol. Nevertheless, the Nyon arrangement is regarded as an unsatisfactory one, because it does not conler belligerent rights to the warring parties in Spain. Exception is also being taken to the declaration in the Nyon arrangement that the execution of the Nyon Conference decisions will be carried out in the Western Mediterranean by the British and French fleets. “No Mediterranean agreement can be regarded as being an important one,” says the “'Frankfurter Zeitung,” “which ignores Italy’s natural share in the mastery ot the Mediterranean Sea.”

The “Frankfurter Zeitung” also declares: “Neither the British nor the French, even with sixty destroyers, can control the Mediterranean Sea alone, and as they please—still less rule it alone!”

The master of the German ship “Girgenti,” reported to the Non-In-tervention Board, that between 6 and 6.30 p.m., on September 11, a Polish officer disappeared from the ship off Cape Ushant. His absence was noticed when a meal was served at 6.30, the officer having last been seen half an hour earlier. The ship was put about, and an unsuccessful search was carried on until dusk. The circumstances have been reported to the Polish and German Governments.

HITLER’S ESTIMATE. NUREMBERG. September 14. On the eve of the Nyon Agreement, Herr Hitler launched a fierce attack on Republican Spain, addressing the closing session of the Nazi Congress. He said it was ridiculous to regard Jewish Bolsheviks as being Spain. Britain and France maintained that great interests of theirs were involved in Spain, but how Spain was governed did not ’concern them. They had no more right concerning political interests in Spain than they had in Germany. Britain and France might pretend to be disturbed lest Spain were occupied bv Italy and Germany, but Germany would he horrified at the possibility of a Russian conquest of Spain. “We refuse to take advice from statesmen lacking our knowledge and experience,” he added. FLYING BOATS. OFF TO MEDITERRANEAN. (Received this dav at 10.30 a.m,). LONDON, September 15. A squadron of reconnaissance flying boats from Felixstone will leave for Malta to-morrow to participate in the Mediterranean patrol. It will later he joined by a squadron from Pembroke Dock, \ THE NEXT MOVE. (Received this dav at 10.30 a.m.). ROME, September 15. The “Gayda” in an article says the next move rests with Britain and France whose one-sided policy in the Mediterranean does not conform with a spirit of collaboration and friendship.
