OVERTIME PAY MEASURE BEFORE PARLIAMENT. (Per Press Association—Copyright). WELLINGTON', May 28. YYTien the Rouse resumed discussion on the committal of the'Shops and Offices Amendment Bill, Mr S. G. Smith thought the bill wa s a little less harmful than other Labour measures, that preceded it, but there were still one or two clauses which he thought the Minister would be well advised to modify. The Hon A. Hamilton doubted if clerks in solicitors’ offices and banks would be any better off under the bill than they are at present, and thought they would lose some of their privileges..

, The Hon H. T. Armstrong, in reply, said ho did not think any previous Minister had made as many amendments to a measure as he had. Provision for limiting the payment of overtime to employees receiving less, than £3OO a year had been found to be an anomaly, and had been removed. The second reading was carried.

He said the measure was purely a machinery, measure, and it was pat through all stages and passed.

Urgency was accorded the passing, of the shops and Offices Amendment Bill, wliich was then considered ?n committee.

The debate on the short title centred mostly round the payment of overtime to auctioneers! at stock sales.
