PERRY DEFEATS McGRATH.

MELBOURNE, Jan. 11. At the Australian tennis championships to-day, results were:-—• Singles semi-final:—Perry defeated McGrath 6/2, 6/3, 6/1. AVomen’s Singles semi-finals: —Af-iss Lyle. defeated Airs Hopman 6/1, 7/5; Miss Round defeated _MLs AVestacott 3/4, 6/2. Mixed Doubles, quarter-finals.—Kir-t>y and Alls Bond defeated Moon and Miss \A 7 hittaker 6/3,, 6/4; Boussus and Miss Bicker ton defeated jVienzel and Miss AA’oodward 6/3, 7/5, A better showing was expected than was made by McGrath against Perry. McGrath attacked Perry on the backhand, but he was unable to withstand the latter’s fast drives, and the match was thus disappointing, as a great battle was expected in view <>f McGrath’s great fight against Perry at the 1934 national meeting, and also of his victory over him at Sydney in December. Perry i s undoubtedly right back in form. Crawford will have to be at his best to have any chance of winning the final to-morrow.
The .Englishwomen,-• Misses Lyl e and Bound, pursued an untroubled course through the semi-finals - though iMrs Hopman gave Miss Round a good fight to-day. •
MELBOURNE, Jan. 11. Women’s Doubles, semi-final: Misses Gyle and Dearman defeated Mesdagies Molesworth and Westmatcott c/4, 6/4. The result was a foregone conclusion, Misses Lyle and Dearman forming a strong combination, excelling in all aspects of the play.
doubles final (Received this day at 10.40 a.m.) MELBOURNE, January 12. In the doubles fina'l, Crawford and McGrath defeated Perry and Hughes 6-4, 8-6, 6-1.
In the imixed doubles, Kirby a n d Miss Bond defeated Cummings and Mesdames Westmocott 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
■B'oussus ,and Brtekerton defeated ‘Quist and Lyle 6-4, 11-9. Crow ford aad MrG r ath played in brilliant combination, downed the English champions in ta thrilling match. 'McGrath’s play was' in contrast to his singles form- He never played better. The pair won on pure merit. Perry a ml 'Hughes were beaten all along.
WELLINGTON V. CANTERBURY. WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. Thp team to represents Wellngton against Canterbury in the Wilding Shield match on January 18th and 19th is as follows:—D. G. Franco, N. Smith, Forking N. Bedford. Doti Pk-s combinations: France and Smitht, Ferkins and Bedford. The Nunnolly Casket match, Wellington v. Canterbury, will he played at Miramar on February Ist and 2nd.
