RUGBY FOOTBALL

SATURDAY’S ' CONTESTS

' SEDDON SHIELD

Considerable interest i s being shown: locally ■in the third of this, season’s contests for the Sctidon Shield which) takes place to-moi'roiw afternoon at; Gryemouth,' The Coast team ha s been ill active training .and should ibe ag. ia; able to' put up , a good fight. To enable, southern visitors to view the match the train from” Ross''at midday has been, accelerated, and at Hokitika has been delayed, leaving for Greymoutfi ,at 1.5 p.m., special fares being charged.

RANFURLY SHIELD. Another game of importance in the football world set down for to-morrow is a challenge -by Southland for the Rmfiirly' 'Shield against the holders, Canterbury, which takes place at- Christchurch. The Canterbury team ' a re home again ' from'' their .northern 'tour which proved a .disastrous one, and it has been reconstructed' 1 with a' view to cutting out weaknesses that were nr'de apparent. 1 The SoWthliaiid team have come inorth with full determination to wrest the coveted trophy, and a hard game is being looked forward to.

PLACE KICKING. An “Old Timer” writing to >a Christchurch paper 'Wc’ently referred to the poor results dbt vied from place kicking on many' occasions. In'his opinion the safest method to place ja. ball .for the kicker' is 'to' hold the ball , with the fineers placed over the..lace and back. Few failures will occur .if this is done. Second, many kickers seem, t.o think a .much'longer distance is gained by placing the ball with the slope .towards: the, goal. Many of the great place-kickers of the past placed the ball with- a slight lean to the kicker. They had no difficulty 'in landing • goals from well inside their own hajfI way line. The me hod of placing enabled them more easily to concentrate, on' the spot to be kicked, because '.’ the , centre seam gave a. good guide. Once the hall is in ■ position the kicker must rot look again at the ghal; but fix his eye on the spot until the kick is taken: . Third', priiy. 'does the 'kicker from a -spot near ' tho go 1 generally attempt to put the hall over the pavilion ? Only enough force should he expended to carry the ball the required j distance; unnecessary force ter d§ to i destroy accuracy. A shot from nearly j halfway is a “do or die” attempt; he boan then’ let himself go for all he isworth.
