AUSTRALIAN TEAM. LONDON, Jan. 39
Hammond, the crack batsman, interviewed says:—“The Australians will take a lot of beating. Though they might not be strong on sticky wickeds, it is a. fine batting side. Kippax, Jackson, Bradman and Richardson will give the crowds a treat. Many thought Grinunett would not come. 1 think he is still the world’s most accurate leg spin bowler.” Leyland, the Yorkshire professional, says:—“The side is weaker in bowling than 'expected. I was surprised at the exclusion of Ryder, though Richardson adds to the fielding strength. Hornibrook should be a useful bowler in England, but not so good as Wall, who is Australia’s best.”
BRITISH OPINION, (Received this dav at 11 o.mA LONDON. Jan. 30. Gendrnl surprise and regret is expressed at Ryder’s non-inclusion in the test team, but the feeling is that the selectors have done their work well and built up a team good at all points. Australia need not fear for the batting strength and the fielding should he of a high standard as youth is predominant. PLUNKET SHIELD. WELLINGTON V. OTAGO. DUNEDIN, Jan. 31. The riunket Shield match, Otago v. Wellington, commenced at Carisbrook this morning in tlujl but fine weather. The wicket was easy, and improving as the day progressed, and outfield slow.
Wellington won the toss and batted. Baker and Foley opened, the former taking strike to Dunning. Baker hit the third ball to the leg boundary and was neatly caught next ball by Knight in the slips. 4—l—4. Hollings was the next batsmen. Runs ; came slowly, Dunning and Ehnes bowling steadily and giving the- batsmen few opportunities, and the fielding was keen. When the total was 25 Lemin replaced Dunning, Lemin making his first appearance in Shield cricket and sending down very accurate balls. Alloo then replaced Elm.es. An hour’s play produced forty, Hollings being 26, Foley 4.
Lemin haring bowled seven overs for eight singles jwas relieved by Moloney. Foley, batting doggedly , reached double figures in seventy minutes. Hollings was more aggresativle, but (anything above a single was very exceptional. When Foley was fifteen he made a weak stroke to an off break from Moloney and dragged it on to his wickets. 61—2—15. Lowry came in. When the total was 72 Dunning replaced Alloo and Lemin replaced Moloney. Lemin’s first ball was responsible for the fall of Hollings who was at the crease for 87 minutes. 76-3-46. Cameron was next batsman. It was raining lightly, necessitating the use of sawdust. ’ The new combination played carefully, but did not brighten the game to any extent. Three fours off Dunning bv Cameron brought up 100 in 113 minutes. Then Lowry was out, leg before, to Lemin. 100-4--17, Cameron being thirteen. At lunc i the score was: — Baker, c Knight, b Dunning ... 4 Foley, b Moloney Hollings, b Lemin ... _ , ••• Lowry, 1.b.w., b Lemm ... ... D Cameron, (not out) Total for four wickets 100
