HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11th. The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present: Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), T. W. Duff, A. R.Eleock, E. W. Heenan, G. Heinz, A. C. Armstrong, J. L. Turner, J. King and Dr Teichelmann. An apology was made for the absence of Mr Evans.

The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. The Mayor reported that he had arranged for a two weeks’ trial of a horse for* use of the Borough and if suitable it would be purchased. The Mayor’s action was approved, the present horse to be disposed of. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.

From New Zealand Refrigerating Company, advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during tire month of August, 1929: 219 sheep, 1 lamb, and 8 cattle. —Received.

From Public Works Department, Greymoutli, intimating that it will not be necessary to submit fresh maintenance Highway Estimates for the six months ending the 31st March next, but that Council will ho advised in due course of the amount available for expenditure on the maintenance of the main highway through this Borough, and that they will be able to limit their expenditure accordingly.—Received.

From Sanitary Inspector, G?eyn.outh. forwarding the procedure to be followed prior to the Council granting permission for the installation cf septic tanks.—Received ; to be filed. from Hon. Secretary, Hokitika Amateur Swimming Club, forwarling report and statement of receip-s and expenditure for the year ending Hth Jul y 1929.—R ecei v ed.

From' Gmoral Motors, Wellington, forwarding copy of “Automotive New Service. ’ ’ —Kecei red. From State Fire anc! Accident Insurance Office, Wellington, intimating that as the accident to Mr John Walsh did not arise out of the course of his employment with the Council, theie is no liability in respect thereof under the Workers’ Compensation Act.—Received.

From Hon. Secretary, Returned eddiers’ Association, intimating that the sum of fifty pounds will be available to subsidise employment of unemployed ex-servicemen by the Borough on a pound for pound basis, but that the amount will not be available until February next.—Received; consideration deferred.

From Secretary, Greymoutli Waterside Workers’ Union, Greymoutli, application for the ime of Cass Square for the purpose of their annual picnic to be held on the last Saturday in January, 1930 Received and granted on usual conditions.

From the Feilding Borough Council. Municipal Association of Now Zealand, Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington, re Urban Farm Lands Rating Bill.—Received. From M. Houstoiv and Co., agents for Robert Adamson, owner, application to sub-divide sections 1275, 1276. 1277. 1279, by transferring sections 1275 and 1276 by .Mr John Stewart, and tile remaining sections to Mr John K. Redder, the sub-division leaving each section with a frontage of 66 foot.— Received ; sub-division approved. From Director-General, Department of Agriculture, intimating that Council’s representations in regard to proposed Slaughtering and Inspection Bill will receive careful consideration. — Received.

From Inspector of Health, return of inspections for month of September, 1929.—Received.

From Robert Henry Ford, application for twenty-one years’ lease of Reserve No. 534, Hokitika, at upset rental of £-1 per annum, with perpetual right of renewal.—Received and accepted. From J. Shannon, application for permission to erect a new verandah at his premises in Revel I Street.—Received and agreed to subject to Inspector’s approval.

From Bank of Now Zealand in reference to frontage to Revel I Street.—Received ; referred to Town Clerk. REPORTS. The Treasurer reported receipts £2158 4s 2d, payments £876 8s lid, credit balance £9OB 19s Sd.—Received. Accounts amounting to £451 13s lOd wore passed for payment. FOREMAN’S REPORT.

T beg to report the following work done during the month. Drains.—Sewell Street drain was completed the full length with (onerete pipes, which occupied most of the month. There remains the sump to be done at the clock tower and a connection across the road in Stafford Street. Sale Street was cleaned out between Weld and Stafford Streets ready to lay pipes for drainage in this section, six inch earthenware pipes are to be laid for house drainage. Streets.—Upper Sale Street which was badly rutted was repaired. A quantity of beach gravel was put on. A part of Fitzherhert Street was graded on the north end, and also a part of Sewell Street, the spoil being used to fill in Sewell Street drain. Footpaths were cleaned in Tancred and Stafford Streets.

Crossings were put in at Mr McGeorge’s in Hampden Street, at Mr Seddon’s on Gibson Quay, Mr KnowlesSmith in Tancred Street and Mr D. P. Stuart’s in Stafford Street.

Water. —A connection was put in to the new brewery on Gibson Quay, also a number of leaks were repaired. Average depth of water in the reservoir for the month—9ft. 7in. —Received,

From Manager Abattoirs reporting during September there were slaughtered—6 cows, 23 heifers, (58 bullocks, 227 sheep, 14 pigs, 1 calf. Condemned —1 bullock. Fees for month £57 10s (same period last year, £57 4s). —Received.

The Treasurer reported that the. rate struck amounted to £5157 of which £3322 12s had been paid, leaving £1834 outstanding, the amount received being G 5 per cent of the total rate. The amount received was practically the same as received last year, the rebate this year granted amounting to £152 4s 3d as against £lsl IBs 4d last year.—Received. The Mayor moved that the meetings of the Council commencing in November he held monthly, on the second Friday in the month. Seconded by M. Elcock and carried. The Council rose at 8.15 p.m.
