GILDED TORTOISES.

LE TOUQUET, June 28. 51 ascots are frequently seen on tho tables here, but probably n«no so curious as three tiny live tortoises owned by the Maharanee of Cooeh Beliar. They have splendidly gilded shells studded with diamonds and sapphires. The Maharanee in her choice of pets sees eye to eye with MisS Fanny Hurst, the American authoress, who is said to earn £50,000 a year. One of her pets is a gilded tortoise studded with stones, by name, “Diamond Jim.” The other day the Maharanee was having a run of had luck at the baccarat tables and declared that she must have her mascots. Her secretary took the first aeroplane to London and came back the same evening with the three tortoises, which the Maharanee placed on the tables at her side. The run of the tables, however, did not seem to change markedly after thoir arrival,
