British Preference. “Bring down the duties on British goods. Don’t raise those on foreign goods'.” urged Mr J. A. C. Allum at a recent meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce in regard to British preference. He considered that tariff matters in New Zealand should he taken out of politics and dealt with by a tariff hoard, on which there should he representation of the primary and secondary industries, as well as the Government. He also suggested that, in view of the very high preference given to British goods, the percentage of labour and materials required should he raised from 50 to 75.
