THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Yrk Economic Cisisis. The Arbitration Court Judge publicly stated that lie had nothing to do with the economic effort of the awards made by his Court, and we think lie was right' hut employers can only pay if they can get at least an equivalent for the wage, if that is impossible it is equally so for the money to he found. AVe have that position at present. The unions have forced lip wages to such an extent that the men cannot obtain employment in the open market and must accept relief work or obtain their meals through the bureau which provides the most necessitous with food free of charge. We are afraid that until wages move downwards the advance of spring will not necessarily find every labourer employed “at full award rates.” —The Mercantile Gazette.
