I THE PRIME MINISTER. ' WELLINGTON, January 6. The Prime Minister will go north again towards the end of the month to attend an official reception to the officers and men of the cruiser Chatham which is duo at Auckland about the 23rd or 24th. inst. There will Ire various festivities in connexion “with the arrival of the Chatham, including, possibly. a ball at Government .House. While Mr Massey is in the Auckland district he will open a now high school in his own constituency. After that Mr Massey is going, by invitation, to attend the Otago A. and P. Show at Dunedin, and on this trip lie will spend a few days in Christchurch. He also purposes visiting the West Coast of the Smith Island, but it is not certain whether he can fit this visit in on Miis trip. He may go to the Samoan md Cook Islands in the Chatham about h e middle of April. He is particularly anxious to see Samoa, but whether or not he will he able to make such a visit will depend upon what is doing here it that time.

SHORT OF COAL. AUCKLAND, January 7

A curtailment of gas supply here Ins again been rendered necessary by Die non-arrival of expected coal supplies. The Auckland Gas Company has announced that, as from to-morrow the gas pressure in districts outside the ciny proper will bo reduced except between the hours of 4.30 p.m. and (3.30 p.m. The steamer Shahristan, which inis been awaiting a cargo of coal at Newcastle for a month, has now lvecn diverted to load general cargo. Then the holidays have interfered with coal supplies from Westport. The earliest slnpniicnt promised to the Company is not expected to sail from Westport before .Monday.

The coal stocks held at present in Auckland are less than 1000 tons, which is sufficient only for about live days, and tin* gas curtailment is tlverefore likely to operate for alxiut. a week at least. The coal supplied to the Company is controlled by the Government Control Committee in Wellington.
