Staughton lias arrived from Japan, where, for several years, he oc* cmpied a prominent business position. He says that Japan’s aim is to dominate the whole of the East, beginning with China, then Manchuria, and the maritime provinces of Siberia, gradually movyig down to Java, the Phillipines and Australia. They also have eves on South America. Their agents are .sending information to the Foreign Office from whatever country’ they are in, for future guidance. i ANOLO-JAPANESE alliance.

It is understood that Britain will consult the United States on the subject of the renewal of the AngloJapanese Alliance . Formal discussions began a few months ago, and resumption is likely when Mr Harding assumes office. The belief prerails in official and diplomatic circles lenewal of the Alliance is inevitable, as the Far Eastern interests of England and Japan require stabilisation. Britain will reach a decision before the Imperial Conference in May, when the Dominions will announce their attitude.
