DERANGED MAORI.
EXCITING INCIDENT
MAN WOUNDED WITH RIFLE.

WANGANUI, April 27. An exciting incident occurred six miles from Bulls to-day, when a Maori,« who is believed to be deranged, had an altercation with Mr. Ross, manager of a farm belonging to Robert Russell, of Wanganui. Ross -galloped on horseback from the Maori, who fired three shots with a rifle, the third taking effect in the shoulder.
The Wanganui police were informed that the Maori had barricaded himself in and was firmg at passers-by. A number of police went armed to the scene, but on arrival they found the man had heen arrested. The arresting constable was wearing a military overcoat, as was the Maori, who, it is stated, came forward and saluted and was taken in charge.
The injuries to Ross are not believed to be gerious, but details are not available.
