CRICKET.

HAWERA CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING.

The- annual general meeting of the? Hawera Cricket Club was held in the Borough Council Chamber* last even* ing,, Mr. J. M. Nielsen, who was voted to the chair, presiding over an «n----thusiastic gathering. The interest taken in the clubs affairs and the sport generally was evinced by tfcot large number of members present and the attention which. wa» given to the* numerous business matters tabled. The report and balance-sheet for the 1922<-23. season, was presented and "adopted without discussion. The balance-sheet disclosed a satisfactory financial' condition, and, the Mport read as follows: —Our total membership was 56 playing members- (35. Saturday members and 21 Wednesday members). We entered two teams in the senior com- ' petition and one in. th« junior competition. In. the interest of cricket generally -mt again, endeavoured, to make our- senior teams as. even as. possible. This plan,, though, discounting either team's chances of winning the competition, created great rivalry between the local elevens, and provided close contests. Excelsior and Midlands tied for third place out of six teams. The junior*,, however, though generally short, easily won. the junior competition, losing only one match. Their progress under Captain L. A. Taylor cam be likened only to Warwick Armstrong's team of 1921. By hard battling;,, Mr. Saxon-Jones and others gave _ . a great uplift to Wednesday cricket by ~"~r organising two local teams and by persuading Normanby to enter an eleven. Manara making a fourth team, the competition was entered into with great enthusiasm,, one of the Hawera teams winning after a keen season. With regard to the club's finances, we started the season with only a few shillings in hand (5s sd). After expending all our receipts—£s9 (Borough Council I £20, material £34, sundries £s)—we i are left with two accounts to meet > totalling £5 lls, but these will be paid within a week by assured donations promised but not yet collected. Playing members' subs. (£52) are in advance of last season, by £6. The margin, would have been greater and finance consequently better, only several members, without paying, half-way through the season either left the district or gave up the game. This is a point the incoming committee should watch, for nearly every season the club loses £$ to £10 in this way. Once a player joins as an active member his subscription should be paid, otherwise estimates re extra, material are of no avail, and often leave the club in debt at the close of the season. As better pickets are now required, it is hoped we may raise some finance from hon. members' subscriptions. During the season 1921-22 1 £14 was collected under this heading, 1 j but nothing, during the past season. ■, As to material, we have on hand-11 ' good bats, 1 new and 2 good secondhand balls, 8 pairs pads, 2 sets stumps I and bails, 1 telegraph board, 1 crease i marker, 1 mallet, 2 pairs batting ; gloves, 2 sets practice nets and pegs, ■ and I locker; estimated value £40. i The thanks of the club are due to all • donors (£5 15s being received). Mr. • -Nielsen donated a pair of battins ; gloves and Mr. Worrall a pair of pads..... The Hawera and Normanby Star are to j-J "be especially thanked^ for giving' so >". much of their valuable space to the. jn,L ' terests of our games. Messrs. Beni i nett and Sutton have generously protnj ised a trophy for competition for the

incoming season. ! The following new members were enrolled: Messrs. H. Franks, L. H. little, Maurice Shaw, L. Hunt, Rev. E. N. Goring, W. Entwistle, Rev. H. W. Monaghan, P. R. 'Fulton, J. MoOalman, G. T. Smith, and D. Dalgleish. Hon. members: Messrs. J. Garnet, W. R. Shaw, B. J. Shrimpton, and P. Boyd. • Mr. L. A. Bone was elected president. Vice-presidents: Messrs. E. Dixon, G. McCarthy, to whose activities during the previous season eulogistic reference was made, was unanimously re-elected to the office of dub captain. Mr. Robt. Davies, senr., was ap> J*»i?nfcai hon. secretary with Mr. A. WorraJl a* assistant. Tiie retiring secretary, Mr. .G. Mahoney, who was proposed for re-appointment, expressed his regret that private affairs prevented him from accepting the position for the coming season- His intimation was received by the meeting with regret, and at a subsequent stage of the proceedings Mr. Mahoney, on the motion of the incoming secretary, was accorded an -enthusiastic vote of thanks in recognition of his valued services to the club and the able manner in which he had discharged the secretarial duties during his term of office. Mr. H. A- Lennon was re-appointod as hon. auditor, his past work on beii&Jf of the club being, recognised by a vote of thanks carried by acclamation. Committees were appointed as fol-

lows : Executive - committee—Messm. A. Kean, L. A.. Taylor, W. Brooks, B. Haughton, T. Macbin, and F. Beeby; classification committee^-Messrt. i\ Beeby, L. A. Taylor and S. J. Mills; grounds. and materials committee— , Messrs. T. Maohin arid J. Davies, Jan.; I canvassing committee—Messrs. J. F. I Tiddy and J. G. Nichol; delegate to I the association—Messrs. J. F. Tiddy, P. Silson. and B. Haughton. : ; *?■ It was decided that subscription fees be in accordance with the previous scale—viz., ten shillings for membem under, and one guinea for those over, twenty years of age,, the time allowed. for payment being subsequently extended to two months from the date of j the opening game of the season. The entry of teams in the coming season's competitions was left in the hands of the executive committee, and the selection comarittee was recommended to retain, as far as possible, the composition of last year's teams. On the conclusion of a lengthy discussion: regarding- the preparation of wickets, it was decided, on the motion of Mr. P. R. Fulton, that if permission were obtainable, from the Borough Council the work of preparing two pitches, one of papa and one of clay,, be proceeded with as an. experiment, and that if these were found unsatisfactory matting be used. The club's opening day was fixed for September 2&, when a match between members would be arranged. The meeting closed with vofees of thanks to the chairman and all *etiring officers.
