THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1923. HAWERA POST OFFICE SAVINGS BANK.
Important information, to depositors with the Post Office Savings Bank is contained in an article published in another part of to-day's paper. Hawera has been raised to the status of a ledger office, and from the beginning of next nionth withdrawals can be made at the Hawera office without the delay at present ocoasioned by waiting for notice of withdrawal being sent to New Plymouth and the posting back of a withdrawal warrant. Depositors should carefully read the information, contained in the article, which sets out how j the change will operate. Readers will see that the alteration is an important one for the district, and we take it that it is a recognition of South Taranaki by the Department. The change suggests that the volume of savings bank business done by the Hawera Post Office is sufficient to extend the facilities for those who deposit with the Post Office To people living in the towns in South Taranaki the change should be welcomed. * If they have their accounts transferred they will be able to come to Hawera and withdraw money from the Post Office without de-, lay, but if they do not transfer their; accounts they will have to operate on i them through New Plymouth as at present. A depositor living at, say,' Manaia has, under the present ar-.j rangement, to have a notice of withdrawal sent to New Plymouth and wait for the withdrawal warrant to reach Manaia before he can receive the amount he desires to take from his account. ' This means a delay of at least a couple of days. He may, of course, withdraw money by telegraph, but he has to pay the cost. Under the new arrangement a depositor living at Manaia will, if he transfers his account to Hawera, be able to withdraw at Hawera without notice, but he must come to Hawera Post Office. Large numbers of people come into Hawera each week from the other towns of the district, and no doubt a great number of depositors in. these towns will transfer their a<*counts to Hawera and thus enjoy the facility which is extended to the district. We believe that the new arrangement will be welcomed by the people of the district, and that the Department will find that the volume of business done in South Taranaki will be suffiejejit. to warrant Hawera being made A 1 chief office, as we suggested In a previous article.
