MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE,

CHRISTCHURCH, July ly. The sixteenth biennial municipal conference opened with an attendance of ol> delegates, presided over by MrFleshar, Mayor of Christchurch. A motion of. sympathy with the relatives of the late >Sir William Fraser was carried. Mr Fleshar, in welcoming the deelgates, said it was the first time for the conference to be- held' outside of Wellington. He believed it should be annual and go round. Mr- Fleshar (referred to the valuable work of the Canterbury Progress League, which was the envy of other provinces, and called on the president," Mr W. K. Alpine, to weicome the delegates. Mr Alpine outlined the functions of the League, which represented 120 bodies, on whose behalf he welcomed tho delegates. Responses were made by Mr Baildon; Deputy-Mayor oi Auckland, and Mr TapJey, Mayor of Dunedin.
