SENATE BY-ELECTION
BY CABLE—KtBSS ASSbCIAI'IOJT—COPYRIGHT NEW YORK, July 16. Telegrams from St. Paul, Minnesota, ■state that early returns indicate that Magnus Johnson, a farmer-labour candidate, is leading his opponent, Jacob Preus, Republican, at the by~elect,Y>n for the United States Senate, to fill the vacancy caused by the death, ot Senator Knute Nelson, Republican. This is probably the most important by-election since Mr Harding became President. The Republican Pa.rty in the Senate, if Mr Johnson as elected, will" be reduced to seven.
Prues, who was Governor of Minnesota, resigned in order to run for the Se.natorship. The Republican party organisation made a strenuous effort in support of Preus.
Both candidates are engaged in a stirring appeal to tlie people. Johnson .asked for the fanners' support, claiming that President Hai'fldng's administration was neglecting their interests. Johmon, although a regular Republican, attacked the tariff in order to gam the support of Labour.
