HAWERA'S BUSINESS EXPANSION.
-4 The direction in which the business por-' tion of Hawera is likely to extend is a matter which has. frequently been dis-. cussed. At present there appears to! be some extension in all directions, but' in almost every street there is some obstacle to a continuous line of busi-. ness houses. At one end of High1 Street are the water tower, municipal' buildings and fire brigade station; at' the other end the Presbyterian Church ! brings the business portion to a halt, i In Princess Street the Soldiers' Club,! the memorial, and, later, the municipal' buildings, will block the way on one! 5 side. In -Union Street, the Masonic j Hall will always cause a break. Along j Regent Street is the Methodist Church j •close up to the present business area, I and the Catholic Chuch is not far off-, ' the business area in. Victoria Street.; | The town must expand, and the direc-1 , tion in which it will go will probably, 1 bo determined as much by those who are prepared to invest in buildings aa : by the position of the railway station,! or any other factor, and it looks as! though former expectations with regard to Union Street may yet be fulfilled. Several valuable sections in this street are awaiting buildings, and, as assessments are high in this particular - ■ street, the owners may soon deem it ads visable to get.busy and make their seel tions earn something instead of being c merely a means of increasing their con" b *ributions in taxation. a. * )
