_. _ l A . CHARGE AGAINST NEWS VENDOR, i ; (by telegraph—press association.) I CHRISTCHURCE, May 22. Frank Smithy a news vendor, aged seventy, was ordered to came up for i sentence when called on for obtaining a pension certificate by means of a false statement. The police gave evidence- j that Smith failed to declare that he' had £160 in the savings bank, and had j declared his earnings at 30s per week. He obtained the pension for ten months, when it was stopped and he had since j to refund £18 penalty to the Department. The Magistarte said penalties provided by the Act were heavy, but! he was loath to send the man to gaol. |
