TOWN BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday, when Comrs. Coad (chair), Hurliman, McEwen, Bennett, and later Comr. Peach, were present.
Mr. H. Mellow wrote asking for a reduction in the license fee for billiard room, owing to there being only 6ix months to run, and. after discussion the.'fee was reduced by half. The District Engineer, N.Z. Railways, wrote stating that the Department were prepared to do away with the two crossings immediately south of the station, and another will be put in between the two. Comr. McEwen said this would be a good, move if the crossing was put in opposite Stafford, street, but would the Department be prepared to help with the necessary filling. Comr. Hurliman said that no doubt it would be a good thing provided funds would allow. On the motion of Comrs. McEwen and Bennett, it was decided, to inform the Department that the Board would be willing to have the two crossings closed, providing the new one is put facing the main street) but owing to financial stringency the Board was not able to undertake the work. On the motion of Comrs. Hurliman and: McEwen, the fee for cattle registration was fixed at £1 per head. Comr. Hurliman brought up the question of charging rent for unopened streets which are not available for registered cattle, and the clerk was authorised to make arrangements with the occupiers. It was decided to write to the Railway Department, requesting that a culvert be put in at-the approach to the station. The dog registrar is to be instructed to take legal .proceedings against all owners of unregistered dogs after 14 days. j The sanitary inspector's report was read and adopted. i Resolved that Mr. D. J. Hughes be written to drawing his attention to the necessity of his felling remaining trees on Ngaronga road, and that "Mr. C. Coxhea-d he asked to cut hawthorn fence on the same road. Comr. "Hurliman said it was decided by the late Board to leave the matter of raisins; a loan for town improvements to the incoming Board, and he asked the Board's opinion on the matter. Comr. Bennett said he was against any increase in rates.
