GIFT OF GUNS.
—- — I THE McDONALD CHARGES. (BY TELEGRAPH PBESS ASSOCIATION.) ) WELLINGTON, Oct. 18. J Seen in reference to the reply, in the House, of the Minister of Defence 'in regard to a charge that guns and i exhibition rifles, etc., had been given to a reputably wealthy man, and that certain charges connected therewith were defrayed at. the public expense, Colonel T. W. McDonald, who made the charge, in an address to the electors of Wellington East, stated that j the Minister's answer was an unqualij fied admission of the truth of the j charge made by him. The amount; was never mentioned by him, neither . did it affect the matter. It was., remarked Colonel McDonald, purely a question of principle. Exhibition rifles were of great value, and were, he be- j lieved, incapable of being replaced in the Southern Hemisphere He welcomed the opportunity of giving evidence before a committee of the House both on this matter and on the missing stores question. "My only desire,''' added Colonel McDonald, "is that the inquiry will be held without delay, and the result at once be made public.''
