DIFFICULTY IN HAVING CLAIMS

PAID

(BY TELECfIAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

DANNEVIRKE, March 15

The Chamber of Commerce discussed the matter of claims against the Railway Department for goods lost in transit. One member instanced a case in which he had been trying for twelve ' months to get a claim for £21 settled. The Department admitted liability, but owing to the regulations was only prepared to pay £10. Moreover, a trader could not sue for .recovery, except by action in {she Supreme Court against the King, and then only with the consent of the Attorney-General. He claimed that this was an extraordinary position, and advocajted an amendment of the law giving the people the right to sue the Department.

The Chamber decided to take the matter up and refer the question to the member for the district.
