EUROPEAN COAL SHORTAGE

POSITION VERY SERIOUS

INCREASED PRODUCTION

NECESSARY

BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOfiIATTQN—COPYRIGHT

(Received Aug. 6, 11.25 a.m.)

LONDON, Aug. 3. The Supreme Economic Council met in London at the week-end. It viewed the European coal situation with, the utmost gravity. Production has fallen dangerously low, and it is impossible to decrease the consumption sufficiently to meet the deficit owing to essential minimum requirements. The only remedy is to increase production and improve the distributive organisation. The latest estimate of the British output is 180,000,000 tons, which does not suffice for internal consumption. Italy's prospects are considered grave in view of the cessation of British exports.
