DISSATISFIED WITH NEW

CLASSIFICATION

(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 4. The conference of the Post and Telegraph Officers' Association to-day considered about sixty remits from various branches, covering the opinions of the service regarding the new salary schedules. The following resolution was carried: "That this conference submits, on the following grounds, that the reclassification, as disclosed by the classification list recently issued, is not satisfactory: (a) That it has not. provided fixed increases to all pre-war maxima to cover the • increased cost of living that has been accepted as a fair basis of reclassification by the Public Service Commissioner and the Railway Department; (b) that insufficient effort has been made to differentiate between officers on the ground of superior ability or lack of ability; (c) that the guarantee of minimum salary after completion of the training period of five years (exclusive of the telegraph ! messenger service) has not been given effect to; ~(d) that the consequential effect of failure to embody the principle of this guarantee has been to leave officers with considerable service beyond the messenger stage in the position where they cannot do justice to the needs of their dependents should they be married or assume the full right's of manhood and set up hom»s for themselves should they be single; (c) that many of the officers in the general division with shorter service and performing lower grade duties have been allotted better salaries than clerical division officers of longer service who are performing efficiently higher grade duties."
