'{Fi.T-mi Our Own Correspondent.) A social evening and sale of produce, •etc, was held in tii e Public Hall ou Friuay. May 16th, the proceeds of. which I *re towards the fund being raised by Mrs Lovell, of Hawera, for providing • comforts and luxuries for those of the ! boys who have not yet recovered from i the hardships and wounds received by tliem during their service at the front, and who are under treatment at the Hawera Hospital, An appeal of this kind is always very sympathetically received by the Ararata settlers., and t&eir | sympathy; was shown in a. very practical j manner, for they assembled in great j } force, and brought with, them not only ( I large quantities of fruit, vegetables, I cakes, bread, poultry, mutton and use- j i fnl articles such as a lady's side saddle,' | lamps, etc., but also what is of the ; greatest assistance -at these gatherings, ■ well lined purses, which were gtneivxs|ly opened and the contents spent in I purchasing the good things offered 1 j them. The .promoters of the social I wer e delighted with the result, which j reached the handsome sum of £27, ! which is -a creditable amount to be j raised in one evening by a scattered I coittmunity like Ararata. During the i evening refreshments, provided by the j ladies, were handed round, and dancing •j was indulged in until an early hour to music provided by Mrs J. Winks, while ' Mr Willard officiated as M C.
