VITAL STATISTICS

LAST YEAR'S BAD RECORD

(Special to Star.)

WELLINGTON, May 22 The year 1918 was not only a bad one from the point of view of the exceptionally large number of deaths which occurred in New Zealand but it was notable for the great decrease in the number of births, the result being that instead of the population showing a natural increase of well over 17,000—a s it had done during the preceding ten years—the natural increa.se was only 9496. The position is well shown by a .compulsion, of the figures for last year and those for the year 1917: ..„,„ Births. Deaths,, Ex. Births. 1917 ... 28,239 10.528. 17,711 1918 ... 25,860 16,364 9^496
