PERSONAL ITEMS.

Rev. R. H. Hobday, who has taken Rev. G. W. Dent's place as vicar of Eltham, arrived by mail train on Thursday. The induction service will be conducted by Yen. Archdeacon Reeve, of Wanganui, this evening.

Mr J. W. Whittaker, of Manawatu, who has had a long acquaintance with dairy work, has received the appointment of auditor for the Government in connection with the butter-fat levy, his functions being to inspect the books of companies contributing to the levy.

A London cable states that Lieutenant Adien Chavasse, the youngest son of the Bishop of Liverpool, was shot while on patrol duty. Captain Chavaese, V.C, made five unsuccessful attempts to bring him in, and on the last occasion reached the spot, but failed to find his brother. It is believed the Germans removed him.

Mr L. J. Williams, of Lake road, Hawera, has received a sympathetic message from the Defence Minister (Sir James Allen) to the effect that his son (Private T. L. Williams) had been wounded on June 23.

Mrs W. Wasley, Hawera, has received word from the Minister of Defence that her son (F. G. Wasley) was wounded on June 25. Sir James expresses' sympathy, and hopes for a speedy recovery. Another message to the same effect has been received from Sir Joseoh Ward. This is the second son of Mrs Wasley's that has been wounded.

At a meeting at Eltham over which, the Mayor (Mr T. B. Cramp) presided, there was a fair attendance. It was resolved that those present memhers of the Second Division form a branch of the league. The officers appointed were: President, Mr G. D. Gow; hon. secretary, Mr Hemingway; committee, Messrs Stewart, Crabtree, Nuttall. Flyger and .Jarratt.. ' "* " *
