MONTHLY MEETING

Correspondence was received as follows :

i*'rom the Department of Agriculture acknowledging' receipt of applications for renewals of slaughterhouse licenses for A. Stewart (liahotu), W. C. Dudle3' (Opunake), A. Thoruiey (Pihama).

I'rom the Secretary cf the Treasury advising that interest £135 18s Bd, will be due on August 1, on bridge loan and hrst special loan. The Taranafii Hospital Board advised that the figures re population supplied by the Department did not include the Maoris of the district, and that consequently the subsidy will be increased and levy on local bodies proportionately reduced. The reduction will amount to £38 12s 6d, the levy being now £1361 14s 6d. From Mr C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., regarding military pensions, stating that he will at all times support a liberal provision being made for soldiers' dependents. From the Valuer-General, enclosing form of declaration which will entitle the Council to receive the amount of subsidy due for 1916-17, amounting to £492 13s 3d.—Return required has been sent.

From J. G. Rutherford, Waverley, advising that he will as soon as possible arrange for cartage of green tlax as ordered by the Council. From J. K. Law, drawing attention to a> bad spot on the Wiremu road, and 'asking that repairs be effected.— Cr Young reported that he had seen that the work had been done.

From Booth, Macdonald and Co., enclosing five copies of application to the Munitions Department in support of order for Acme stone crusher.—The clerk reported that it is expected the crusher will soon be here. He explained that permission had to be obtained from the Munitions Department to import any machinery. A. E. "White wrote stating that he had bought for the Council a number of presses, piping, shafting and metal castings from the Oaonui factory.— The chairman said that a good bargain had been made, because it would probably have cost as much for one ton of parts picked out as for the whole lot. From the District Health Officer, stating that ho has inspected a house on Patiki road, and ordered a thorough renovation. —It was decided that a copy of this notice be sent to the owner. From M. Corrigan, stating that he has prepared crusher site at Punehu and had it fenced off. From the Public Trust Office in New Plymouth, asking the Council what action it proposed taking in regard to acquiring a metal crushing site, and also re deviation of the South road at the Oaonui' -river.—The matter was deferred until next meeting, the clerk meanwhile to interview the Public Trustee. From H. Munro, asking if it can be arranged to have a change of site in reference to crushing metal for contract on Eltham road. —Cr Campbell asid it was necessary to stick to the specifications. To make.the change meant that the metal would have to be carted over some of the metalled road. —Cr "Wright said it would not be fair to other contractors. —It was resolved that the contract must be carried out according to specifications. Special orders in connection with I alteration of boundaries of Rahotu I Ridinec, authorising the Auroa road special loan, and making a special rate of 12-13 d in £ to provide interest [on loan of £1500 over parts of Auroa road, were confirmed. Sor-ie discussion took place on the question of the removal of the crusher from Warea to Oaonui, a distance of nine miles, which took nine days.—Cr \y right saU that there was trouble at the Rahotu bridge, and it got bogged at Or.onui.—The chairman said* that the trouble was that the engine was too heavy, and buried itself whenever it went off the metal road. In addition, the bridges were not able to carry so heavy an engine.

Correspondence was received from Booth, Macdonakl and Co. in reference to the new crusher. The delay in delivery was explained by the abnormal pressure on haulage in'the States.—lt was resolved that the question of the metal crusher be held over and b« taken in committee.

The chairman and Crs Young and Mcßeyuolds were appointed a committee to go into the matter of a road to the beach at Puketapu. and Crs Forpyth, Campbell, and" McNeill of a similar road at Taungatara,

It was reoorted that several patches of blackberry were on the roadside at Rahotu. —It was resolved that notices be given to the foreman to hand on to the defaulters. RATES FOR 1917-18. After some more or less informal disciission it was resolved that the rates be as follows: —Oeo Riding, l|d; Opunake, lid; Rahoto, lid. j FOREMEN'S REPORT, | Oeo Riding (Northern Division) — During the past month the staff in this division have been employed at general surface work, carting out maintenance ■ metal, widening cuttings., cleaning water-tables, etc., the roads treated were the Eltham, Oeo, Watinq Opu-nake-Stratford, Kiri (and Pajtiki. I have also filled in the new concrete ] bridge and had it metalled on the Oeo '. road, and is now opc-.n for traffic. I: have also carted the timber to the'top bridge on the Oeo road. Contract No. j 312 (Eltham road): I would recommend i a progress payment' to H. Munro for | 300 .yards of boulder stone. .'

Oeo Riding (Southern Division") — During the past month the hands in this division have been employed at general maintenance work, clearing oiit watertables and patching on the Main South, P-atiki and Skeet roads. Minor repairs have been done to the Ouri bridge on the Main South road. I havp also, with authority from Cr. S. Campbell, worked £en days, helping Messrs Madgwick and Kehely to put a road down to the beach at the bottom of the Puketapu road, which will give access to plenty of stone for years.

Rahotu (Southern) and Opunake Ridings—During the past month the staff in this iriding have been engaged at water-tabling,' patching, bridge repairs and pipo-making, on the Eltham and Main South roads. The crashing plant arrived during the latter end of [the month, and minor rppairs to ciusher and elevator had t;> be effected before we could proceed with crushing. We have now crushed 200 yards, «-..k1 if the weather permits, will iinish in three weeks' time. The unsettled weather has delayed the construction of this bridge considerably. Weather permitting this bridge should be completed in about three weeks' time.
