FLOODS IN THE SOUTH.
REPORTS FROM GORE AND INYERCARaiLL.
TRAVELLER DROWNED ON A ROAD
BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION
INVERCARGILL, May 27. As the result of continuous rain on Saturday and_ Sunday, heavy floods occurred at various parts of Southland. Washouts occurred on all branch railways and traffic was practically suspended. The rain has now ceased, but it will probably take a week to repair the damage. Samuel Templeton, who was driving a trap from Mokatua to Waimahaka, was drowned on the road, which w ras covered to a depth of five feet. Several witnessed the accident, but were unable to help. He leaves a widow and six children. GORE, May 28. Owing to heavy rains up country, the Mataura River has been rising steadily for? the last twenty-four hours, and at eleven to-day the flood waters appear not to have yet reached the maximum. The damage in town is considerable, particularly in the lower quarters, where houses and shops on the west side are submerged. There is almost a foot of water in the streets. It is believed that farmers, owing to the flood being unexpected, have lost considerable numbers of stock. Little more than one inch of rain fell in Gore on Saturday and Sunday. Up-country reports indicate that the rivers are falling. j
