SHIPPING SHORTAGE.
A REASSURING STATEMENT
BT TELEGRAPH —PREBB ASSOCIATION. ! . DUNEDIN, May 26. | • ' Sir James Allen stated to-day that i ' the Government had been communicat- ■ ing with the Prime Minister and the 1 Imperial Government as to the shipping difficulty, and that, Mr Massey | has sent a reply. Discussing the posf--1 tion the Prime Minister states that unless the submarine difficulty increases • the shipping position in New Zealand ' will improve from July onwards. It ' was practically certain that wool, cheep- • skins, and hides will be requisitioned • by the Imperial Government the same as 1 last season, and probably at the same ; prices. Mr Massey thinks it unlikely : that the Imperial Government will purchase butter, but possibly an additional ! quantity of cheese. With regard to ; tallow and general cargo, the outlook is ■ the same as prevailed this season. The Prime Minister informs Sir ■ James Allen that while producers must ; understand there is considerable difficulty as to shipment there is no rea- ; son to decrease production. Sir James Allen explains that the Government are giving "the question of production careful consideration. Tho matter is now being considered by a conference who are devising means for ' utilising the shipping space to the last I possible capacity.
