OPERA HOUSE
SOUTH POLE EXPED TTION
PICTURES.
The value of cinematography cam be more fully; realised, when one has= the opportunity of viewing a set of" films such as was shown at the Opera, House last evening. They were taken, by the operator who went with Scott'sSoutb. Pole expedition, and present a-, conception and realisation of the region of eternal ice-"which otherwisecould never be Obtained. The seriesopened with a capital seascape taken from the Terra Nova, and was followed by some excellent A riews of killerwhales, seals, penguins, skua .gulls,. etc.* in their native haunts. The succeeding views showed various incidents-, in the Polar party's expedition, ponyand dig teams engaged in sledging;/ the, unique motor vehicle specially designed for the purpose, hauling its laoen sledges over the ice fields, andt the various members of the party hauling their own lighter sledges. Thebea/utiful, -artistic scenes showing extensive ice fields, huge icebergs, etc.,. were -greatly admired, as were alsoi some magnificent views of the volcan©. Mount Erebus. The cinematograph. did net, of course, go on the final stages of the expedition, but it showed^ some pathetic pictures of Captain Scott, ■Dr. "Wilson, Captain Oates, and P.O. Evans in the particular tent and reindeer sleeping-bags in which they ultimately perished. It a* stating a simple fact to say that this series of pictures is an unusually fine one —probably one of thebest ever screened in Hawera. and the opportunity of seeing it should not bemissed. , . .
