TECHNICAL SCHOOL.
The ordinary meeting of the committee was held on Monday evening. There were present: Messrs E. Dixon (chairman), P. ODea, C. A. Strack, H. W. Warcup, L. A. Bone, E. B. Bates, C. O. Ekdahl, and R. F. Page, and R. A. Browne and H. W. Jackson (supervisors). The director reported as follows: — The compulsion extended only from March to October inclusive, and with ihe expiration of compulsion it has been • found necessary to close down for the year the classes in English, arithmetic^ and book-keeping. Most of those holding free places in these subjects seemed desirous of withdrawing as soon as practicable. Many of those taking shorthand, typing and drawing, however, seem anxiovs to attend as long as classes in these subjects are offering. Only one entry was. received for the Hoard's examination in book-keeping. This is disappointing, for it is. certain that many could pass both the preliminar^r and the junior examinations. Parts of the museum from the ; library continue to arrive daily. The woodwork bov.s are putting it in position. . Mr Browne stated that the classes in practical work—shearing, wool-sorting, and dairy work—would commence on Monday, November 24, and that it is necessary to start as early as possible, because the sheep are being specially ■lield over for the classes. Arrangements have been made by Mr Browne for the boys to visitTthe Hawera factory on Glover road in order to gain ah insight into such work. Sheep have been Icindly offered by Mr Nolan, Mr Hunter and others. i Next week it was probable that the chairman of the Board and the Chief Inspector would be through this part of the district in connection with a school garden competition, visiting Waverley, ltfaxwelltown, Manutahi, Mokoia, Oha-j-ngai, Tokaora, Manaia, Okainwa, Mangatoki, Kaponga, and possibly a few more schools. It was resolved to forward an invitation to them to be present at a suggested demonstration of practical work. Eleven boys from outside Hawera besides the local boys will * ~&e part in the demonstration. Mr Browne mentioneH that the Department lias now recognised the lectures given Ijv him as agricultural instructor in various parts of the district, and hf-s jnWeedtopay capitation for the work -done The chairman, and members agreed that this was very satisfactory. fThe meeting then concluded.
