GIG ACCIDENT.
Two members of the permanent defence' staff, Sergeant-Major Duuhan. and Quartermaster-Sergeant Mcßae : met with a nasty accident on Wednesday afternoon, while driving to Opunake. WJien near the Kaupokonui factory the horse unexpectedly shied, and swerving quickly, overturned the. gig. Sergeant-Ma jor Dunham, who was driving, was pinned underneath the gig, but retained his hold of the reins. •Quartermaster-Sergeant Mcßae was -thrown clear, and had the prseence of •mind to at once grasp the horse's head .aond hold him down., to say.e,.further. -Vfcrouble. Sergeant-Major Dunham • SUSttaiiied several deep cuts upon the head, rand Nurse Farquar anS the postmistress fCMiss Elliott) who happened to >'oe on ■'the spot, temporarily dressed the •wounds, until tha-arrivsL- of Dr. MilToy, from Martaia, and he put in some meeessary stitches. The Sergeant-Major -3s still.-feeling the effects of the accident, although he is able to be about. Quartermaster-Sergeant M^Rae forfcujnate'ly escaped injury, receiving only -a couple -of bruises on the hands. They desire to thank ilie ladies for their timely assistance.
