POPULATION RETURNS.
The estimated population of Victoria at tne end ot ±9-2 was 1,3/5,081 — Uss,b9o males ana 6b9,18b" females. These figures are contained in tho report ot the State Statist, who points ouc that the increase of population last year, 37,403, was larger xnan in any year since J.BBS. Tne excess of the recorded immigration by sea in 1912 over the corresponding emigration wan 25,318. Of this number, 15,119 represented State-aided immigrants —6912 nominated and 8207 assisted. The expenditure on assisted immigration in 1911-12 amounted to £133,2U3. The estimated population of Greater Melbourne in 1912 was 628,430, or 46 per cent, of the population of the whole State. The population of Sydney at the same date was 694,800. These two cities contain 28 per cent, of the population of the Commonwealth. Twenty-five towns in Victoria contain a population of 3000 or over. A list is given showing the population of the principal cities of the world. London, with 7,252,963 persons, is the most populous city in the world, followed by New York (5,173,064), and Paris (2,888,110). Sydney is the eighth city in the British Empire, and Melbourne the ninth.
