(Received August 1, 12.30 p.m.) X MELBOURNE, August L The closing of Cockatoo Island is due to a recommendation of the Na\al Board, following the report of ah expert that the boilers were unsafe Mr Millen states that when .the idea of costructing ■ vessels for the Australian • Navy at Cockatoo Island was proposed ftVa. stated that Fiteroy Dock was capable of doing the work ™dthe Fisher Government placed a tender for a cruiser and three destroyers with the New South Wales Government, which Sien owned the dock but friction arose between the dockyard authorities and the Naval Board. The latter reported that matters were in such a <onditioß that there was grave risk of the failwe of New South Wales in completing the vessels The Fisher Government therefor! decided to take over the dockyard a* the only solution.
