SUSPENSION OF WORK

WELINGTON, Jan. 19. All the waterside work on the wharves was practically suspended to:day be"iween 10 a.m: andl p.m., while 700 or 800 men held a meeting to listen to the -reading of the clauses of the agreement the workers and shipowners. * The men kept coming and going, so that whils • probably over a thousand heard a portion of the agreement, a great many did riot hear it at all.

After the reading of the agreement cheers were given for Messrs Semple, Webb, Carr, and Parland. Some employers were greatly annoyed ■at the stoppage of work during the busy time of the day, and. some of the men also resented the stoppage of work, because they lost two hours' pay.
