Mr and Mrs Caplen and daughters, ■who have been on a visit to England, have reached Sydney, and are expected to arrive at Wellington by the Moeraki •on Wednesday next.

Mrs Smith, formerly postmistress at Okaiawa, has been re-transferred to her old position there. Miss Woodman will take Mrs Smith's place as counter assistant at New Plymouth.

There is a rumor that Sir Joseph Ward intends to resign his seat, and ihat Mr R. McNab, of Palmerston, will T>e a candidate for Awarua in the Government interest. Mr McNab is at present in Invereargill.

Mr Maughan Barnett, the well-known Wellington organist, will arrive in Hawera to-night. He has been requested by the management committee of the Presbyterian Church, to give an expert report and specification for a proposed new pipe organ. ,

In the Taranaki Herald on Thursday there was reprinted a quotation from the files of 50 years ago, reporting that the Rev. W. Cannell preached at a gathering of Oddfellows. Mr Cannell is enjoying a well-earned rest on the supernumerary staff, and has settled at the scene of his early labors, ; but still preaches occasionally.

Captain G. Holford, who was yesterday appointed harbormaster, for New Plymouth, is a native of that town, and son of Captain J. H .Holford, who was the first harbormaster at New Plymouth after the- breakwater was built. He has been at sea for 23 years—l 2 years with the New Zealand Shipping Company, and 11 years with the Union Shipping Company. He has had command of 19 steamers, and for the past 2| years has nbeen trading between Onehunga, New Plym6uth and "Wellingto.

The Rev. D. Borrie, formerly a Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly, and. who died in Dunedin this week, was born in Perthshire in 1848, and came to New Zealand with Ims 'fa-mite- as a boy 11 years of ag-a. He entered Otago "University ns a student the day it was opened, and he was licensed to preach by the Dunedin Presbytery in 1876. He was inducted to> the North East Valley congregation in 1884 and held the charge until his retirement in 1908. Before and after his giving up active parish work, Mr Borrie held various 'offices under the Assembly. He was Moderator for two terms of a year, and convener of the Church Extension Committee for twenty years.
