The starling and the sea-gull shrikl,, in, the opinion of the Government biologist, Mr Cockayne, as expressed to--the Farmers' Conference, be ancouraiied because of the way they attack the formidable grass grub. According to Mr Sheat, one of the Canterbury delegates to the conference, his promt c must have lost a million of money as a result of the ravages of the gruL in question. It was found in every class of soil. Mr Cockayne says he has not received reports of extensive damage by the grass grub in the Wairarapa district, though he is aware that the grub exists in this and in most other disricts. In Canterbury, he states, many of the pastures have been absolutely destroyed ,and will require to be resown. Tins will be a serious matter for farmers, as the price of grass seed is very high just now.
