OKAIAWA.

t;PEOM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.!

There was a, very fair attendance at the Church of England social on Friday evening, but an unfortunate clashing with a farewell social at Riverdale prevented many from attending who would otherwise have been present. A capital programme of musical items was gone through, the following ladies and gentlemen contributing: Mrs Birchall ("Old Swanee River"), Mr Mackie ("The Auld House"), Rev. Stent (recitation), Mrs Gee ("Long Avenue," and, in response to an encore, "Love's Sweet Song") Mt Winters (eon\jc items), Mrs Birchall ("Like the Ivy, I'll Cling to Thee"), Mrs Gee ("Anchored"). During the evening Rev. Stent made a presentation to Mrs Mackie, who has acted as organist at the services. Mr Stent spoke in appreciation of the work done by Mrs Mackie, and expressed keen regret at her departure* from the district. At the conclusion of the musical programme the hall was cleared, and an enjoyable dance was held. Messrs Barclay and Ballantme supplied the music for the dance, extras being played by Mrs Birchall and Miss Oughton. Miss Hunt accompanied the singers.

On Friday evening there was a large gathering in the commodious packingroom at. the Riverdale factory, the occasion being a farewell social tendered to Mr and Mrs J. W. Paterson and Mr and Mrs C. Paterson, who are leaving to take up their residence at Kapuni. Practically every family in the immediate neighbourhood was represented, while many friends came fr6~m a considerable distance. The social took "tlie form of a dance, interspersed with musical items. After supper had been handed round, Mr C. Washer, chairman of directors of the Riverdale factory, in a few well-chosen words, conveyed to the guests of the evening the regret felt by the residents at their departure from the neighbourhood, and wished them every success in their new home. Mr Washer referred to Mr Paterson, sen., having occupied a seat on the directorate of the factory during the past three years, a position winch he had filled with credit to himself and with benefit to the suppliers. Mr J. W. Paterson suitably replied, expressing the pleasure he felt at having made so many friends. He was not going many miles away, so that he would st-.i'l be in touch with them, and would not have to say good-bye. During the evening songs were given by Misses Htuglies (encored) arid Wasner. and Messrs J. Borrie and Hall. Miss Hughes also contributed two elocutionary items m good style. The music for the dance vras supplied by Mrs G. and Miss Betts (piano and violin), while Mr F. Willcocks acted as M.C.
