HAWERA RAILWAY YARDS

MINISTER UNABLE TO MAKE

ANY CHANGE

The following letter has been forwarded to the Mayor by Mr Pearce, M.P., signed by the Minister of Railways on 25th July :—

Sir, —With reference to the representations made by the deputation that waited upon the Honourable Minister of Public Works at Hawera recently urging that cattle yards should be removed to the opposite side of the Railway, I have the honour to Inform you that with the recent additions made to the yards they .will be quite sufficient for all the reasonable requirements of the traffic for several years to come. A scheme for the rearrangement of the station at Hawera has been considered but the cost would run into several thousand pounds and in view of the many more urgent and important works at present in hand or awaiting funds I regret that I cannot see my way to authorise any. expenditure in the direction desired. There is always more or less smell about busy stockyards, especially where pig traffic has to be bandied. The yards at Hawera are kept well and as cleanly as possible, the floors being concreted and the effluent from the washing down run into a septic tank. Even if the yards were removed to the other side of the line it is quite probable that when the land in that direction is subdivided and the settlement ex-

tended, complaint would be made by "the residents in that quarter and the only possible way in which to avoid the complaint would be to remove the yards entirely from Hawera, and even if this were done complaints would arise in future from any residents who might settle in the new locality.—l have the honour to be, Sir, your obedient servant, J. A. ..MILLAR, Minister of Railways. •
