The revenue for the quarter ended December 31st amounted to £2,591,387, showing an increase compared with the corresponding period of 1907 amounting to £143,590: • RECEIPTS. The expenditure for the quarter was £2,449,831, or £97,055 more than that of the December quarter of 1907, the increases occurring under the following heads: — Railways, £24,000; police, £12,000; defence, £14,000; agriculture, £11,000; education, £24,000; public buildings, £8000.

WELLINGTON, January 29.

According to an interview with the Premier publshed by the Times, Sir Joseph expects a surplus for the year of £142,849. He estimated the revenue at £9,100,000, and there was a balance brought forward of £767,849. The expenditure he estimates will be £8,925,000, and £800,000 is to be transferred to the Public Works Fund, leaving the surplus mentioned. In the Budget he reckoned the surplus would be £74,052. The Premier considers this a good result in face of the concessions in Customs duties, sheep tax, etc., amounting to £425,000. During the last nine months the Advances to Settlers Department has loaned out £939,015 to settlers and £239,310 to workers.
