A .problem concerning the Grand National Steeplechase was jpropojinded at the Liverpool County Magistrates' Court.
jcramk Daviee, of Huline, Manchester, was charged with "frequenting" the shilling enclosure at Aintree. Baviea was making a Uook, and a fireman and railway guard from Warringtan, fancying the chances of Rublo for the Grand National, laid 2s and Is, respectively with the prisoner, the fireman also backing the horse to tne extent of 10s for a place. The fireman should have drawn £7 6s and the guard £3 |lßs, but when' they went to the bookmaker he offered them. 10s each. When taken into custody Davies had 2ls on him. The prisoner said he was tnot N a bookmaker but a newsagent, amd he pawned his watch to get money to make a book on thee races. He started wiCh £7 10s, but on the first race he lost/ £3 10s and £5 on the second.
Wfiereupdh the magistrate' clerk put the following question : You started with £7 10s, and you lost £3 10s on the first race and £3 on the second. How were you going to make a book on the Grand National at 66 <fco 1 with only £1? ' Characterising the affair as a clear case of attempted swindle, tbe bench sent Davies to prison for, a month with hard labour.
