ELTHAM v. STAR

(From Our ELtEam Correspondent.)

Eltham Club had a "<lay out" yesterday, when tKeir three beams defeated Star, and registered a total of 88 pointa to nil. Eltham seniors scored 30 point*, the first juniors 11 points, whilst the thirds put up the respectable score oi 47 points.

The senior match was a good willing contest, despite the large score' piled tip by Eltham. The Stars came on to the field with only 11 men, but" vecrufted another two from the second: juniors, who had just played their game. One of these second juniors, a Maori youth named Martin, showed great form. Playing fullback, he isav.ed 1 the situation for his side time after time. Sis handling of th«s ball was first cla&s, and his tacking sure. With a little more age and weigfit he should make a rep. player. After about 10 minutes' neutral, play a free-kick was awarded Eltham. Th« position was a somewhat difficult one fronl between 25 * and: half-way, but Potier succeeded in landing a neat goal, thus drawing first | blood for Eltham. After another fiva minutes' play Bueklamd ®bt possession of the ball about 25 yanay from the Star line, and after ■& tricky run through fomr of his onponents eroned in a good position. Potier kicked a, good goal. A few minutes afterwards Buckland again succeeded in scoring, but Ehe >majar points w-nve not ridded. L. Moir scored another try for Eltham, which, however, was not converted.

During the first quarter of an hour of the second spell the Eltham players appeared to lack combination. They them seemed to suddenly liven up, and some fine play w<us witnessed. In quick succession tries were scored by Smith, Potier, Burgess, and Buckland. Two of these were converted By Dive andr* Potier. When time was called tne scores stood : Elfcham, 30, Star 0.

The Star are to .be commended for their sporismamlike spirit in keeping their engagement under such trying circumstances. Mr Proctor (Waitara) refereed impartially.

After our report of the Kaponga A. v. Hawera A. soccer match was in print yesterday a much fuller description cam© to hand from our Kaponga correspondent. After describing the game our correspondent says : — For the winners, Stapleton was the mainstay, and /-woa easily the best player on the ground; in fact is the finest soefcer ''that has been seen in these parts. For the local team, I think Bates' performance-, was the best as .goalkeeper. This player stopped cleverly several strong attacks. Preece and J. Law also played well.
